A United Grappling Club coach helping a young child with a movement exercise

A four year old is not a small adult, and a class built for one will not work for the other. Our little kids program is age grouped on purpose so a four year old is never paired against a ten year old, and the whole session is designed around how young children actually learn, which is through games, repetition and short bursts of attention.

Most parents arrive with the same two questions. Will my child be safe, and will they actually enjoy it. This page answers both directly.

What happens in a 45 minute class

  1. Line up and greeting. Children learn to bow onto the mat, listen to a coach and stand in a line. For some four year olds this is the hardest part, and it is the part that shows up at school within a month.
  2. Movement games. Crawling, rolling, shrimping and animal walks, dressed up as games. This builds the coordination everything else depends on.
  3. One skill, taught simply. How to fall without getting hurt. How to get up from the ground. How to hold a position. One idea per class, repeated.
  4. A partner drill or a game. Structured, supervised, and stopped the moment it stops being controlled.
  5. Line up and finish. A short talk about respect or effort, then out to parents.

Parent questions

Is four too young to start jiu-jitsu?

Four is the youngest we take, and readiness varies. If your child can follow simple instructions from a coach for a few minutes at a time, they are ready. The free week will tell you.

Can I watch the class?

Yes. There is parent seating and you are welcome at every class. We recommend staying for the first few sessions.

What if my child is shy or nervous?

Very common at this age. A coach will bring them in slowly, and it is fine if they sit and watch part of the first class. Most nervous four year olds are participating by their third session.

Does my child need a gi?

Not for the free week. Comfortable clothes without zippers or buttons are fine. We will help you buy the right size if you continue.

Will my child be paired with older kids?

No. The 4 to 6 program is age grouped, and partners are matched by size within it. Children aged 7 and up train in the Kids and Teens program.
